Carmilla: A New Rock Musical
Book and Lyrics: Alexandra Munroe
Music and Lyrics: Topher Paolucci
Adapted from the 1872 gothic novella of the same name, Carmilla is a grunge rock retelling of the gay vampire story with a 90s twist. Carmilla follows Laura Vorden, a young girl who has returned home from college after her mother’s death to find that her old band has replaced her with the mysterious new girl Mircalla Karnstein. Little does Laura know that her new best friend is actually Carmilla, a centuries-old vampire who has an unhealthy obsession with Laura, and will cut out anyone who threatens their relationship, permanently. Only through rejecting nihilism and confronting her grief will Laura find the strength to face her vampire companion and save the ones she loves.

Carmilla is adapted from the 1872 novella Carmilla by Sheridan La Fanu. Many have stated that Carmilla itself is an adaptation of "Christabel": an unfinished poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge, which there are references to in our piece. The work is said to have started many popular vampire tropes, with Baron Vordenburg usually cited as the first vampire hunter. The book served as an inspiration for many vampire stories to follow including Bram Stoker's Dracula and Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire. Carmilla and Laura's story is also referenced in many works, from Castlevania toTrue Blood.
